A Banner Day at the Orange Bowl

I don't think anybody is expecting much of a crowd this Saturday when the Miami Hurricanes - unranked for the first time since 1999 - take on the Houston Cougars. Not only are they 1-2 (in a city that demands championships to get their attention) but they still look like a disjointed unit, searching for an identity and looking for its long-lost swagger that was once a program trademark.

To top it off, the game will be nationally televised on ESPN2. The over/under on attendance is around 35,000.

Yes, the Cougars are an exciting bunch, but they have built their 4-0 mark on a quartet of 'have nots'. So why go to the Orange Bowl?

Because you never know what you might see. Folks, this is college football, anything can happen - on and off the field, and well above it. You just never know. We could see the continued development of Kyle Wright. The precociousness of true freshman runner Javarris James. The playmaking of Sam Shields. The stoutness of right tackle Jason Fox. There is still a lot to look forward to as Cane fans. We'll be getting a look at the future of Miami football.

Yeah, yeah, I know, they have this coach you folks seem to have a problem with, despite a sterling mark of 54-11 at Miami. But Larry Coker is Miami's coach until otherwise stated.

Some of you want ABC on your sidelines - Anybody But Coker. But in college football, hope springs eternal. There's always a new day, something to look forward to.

If you make the trek down to 'The Grand Ol' Lady', you might just see a message being sent. A sign of better things to come. A plane of expectations that will be set.

It just could be a banner day at the Orange Bowl.
