Interview with LB Prospect Cameron Bulman

CanesOverHere’s Brad Ketron chatted recently with Taravella High School's star LB prospect, Cameron Bulman. Here's how their conversation went:

What’s your favorite song, artist, etc…what are you listening to right now?

Cameron: I’d say Smashing Pumpkins. I like old school. My favorite songs by them have to be “Zero” or “Disarm”.

What’s your favorite food?

Cameron: Spaghetti, probably.

What are some of the other schools that have been in contact with you, whether it’s serious offers or just a letter showing interest?

Cameron: Virginia Tech, Georgia Tech, USF, UCF, FAU, FIU…that’s just some of them.

How serious has Miami been in their contacts with you? Have they talked to you personally or have they just been doing their research and getting film on you?

Cameron: Yeah, they’ve just been talking to my coach so far, trying to get tapes. I haven’t gotten to talk directly to any of the coaches yet.

What is it that you want to major in no matter where you end up going to college?

Cameron: Engineering. That’s what I want to study no matter where I go.

Okay—name a player, college or pro, who you try to pattern your game after at the middle linebacker position.

Cameron: Probably Brian Urlacher, because he can do it all; coverage, pass rush, the way he sees the field. He’s just an all around great player.

Speaking of comparing your game to another player’s game, talk a little bit about playing the middle linebacker position at Taravella. Are there people who constantly try to measure whoever’s playing that position to what Dan Morgan accomplished while he was there?

Cameron: Yeah, I think it’s great. I really don’t hear a lot about being compared to him, but my sister knew him when they went to Taravella at the same time. I hope that I can live up to that standard.

I’ve watched your videos and I have my own thoughts on what tools you could bring to a team on the next level as a middle linebacker, but what tools do you feel make you a threat to contribute nicely on the next level to a D1 squad?

Cameron: I feel the best part of my game is reading the play quickly, reading the offensive linemen and getting to the football. I’m confident I can do that on the next level.

Do you play any other sports at Taravella?

Cameron: No, I’ve concentrated on football only for a while now. I play baseball some with my friends, but football’s it for me.

Who was your childhood football team growing up and why?

Cameron: I’d say the Indianapolis Colts. Mainly because my mom’s from there and she got me on the road to liking them and I’ve stuck with them since then. Florida State’s my favorite college team though.

One question that always gets brought up about recruits on the D1 level is how their grades are and will they be able to qualify with no problems—tell me where you stand right now as far as grades go.

Cameron: I have a 3.9 GPA right now. No way I lose track of that, that’s my main focus next to football. I’ve taken the SAT and made a 1200 already. I plan to take the SAT again soon, and I’ll take the ACT as well.

I got to meet you in person at the FSU game earlier this year and even though you were rooting for the Noles, tell me what you thought about the Canes fans who were there and how they supported their team in a hostile environment.

Cameron: It’s great—I love it even though I’m not a Miami fan. I loved the fans and how they supported their team, and though I was there for FSU I knew I’d have fun no matter what the outcome. It was a great atmosphere.

Tell me some of your stats so far this season.

Cameron: Coach went through the tackles for our last game against Douglas, and I had 24 tackles total, 21 unassisted. Overall this year, I’ve got 124 tackles, 80 individual out of those. I don’t have any sacks because we don’t blitz much. I’ve got 3 or 4 forced fumbles and 3 recovered.

You’re playing TE this season as well, how’s that going?

Cameron: Our team’s not much of a passing team, we’re about 90% run. My best game against Piper, I got 3 receptions, and against Coral Springs and I had a touchdown catch.

Does seeing the field this year from the offensive side of the football help you see things better or differently on the defensive side at the middle linebacker spot?

Cameron: Yeah, it helps me get the thought process of what the offensive line would be thinking during a play and how they try to react to me as a linebacker to try to block me. I think that gives me a little bit of an advantage.

Tell me about some of your measurables because a lot of that stuff isn’t out there about you.

Cameron: I’m 6’2, 190. I run a 4.8 forty. I can bench 225 12 times as of right now.

Who’s the single best player you’ve been up against this year?

Cameron: I really can’t pick out one player because we’ve played a lot of really good ones this year. The quarterback for Coral Springs Charter (Evan Landi) is a big guy and has led them to a few wins even though he’s about all they’ve got as a team. Douglas’ QB (David Noshay) was really good too.

What do you do in your spare time besides football?

Cameron: (Hesitates) I don’t know…watch football? (Laughs) I like to play baseball w/my friends. I like hanging out with my friends at the movies in my down time, but right now there’s not much of that with my main focus being football.

Speaking of down time, let’s talk chicks! You’ve got 3 Jessica’s—Alba, Beal, and Simpson—who you got?

Cameron: Jessica Simpson.

Who’s been recruiting you the hardest out of all the schools that have been in touch with you?

Cameron: Georgia Tech, probably. I’ve heard a whole lot from them.

In watching Miami this year so far, what do you think about the resurgence of attitude that Shannon and this new staff have brought to the team in the post-Coker era?

Cameron: I think he’s doing a great job. I hope he keeps it up. He’s a really strong recruiter and I’m really excited for the years to come. I’m really enjoying watching the Hurricanes now.

If you were one-on-one with a big-time D1 coach such as Frank Beamer, Chan Gailey, or Randy Shannon, if they asked you what you could do for their team coming in as a freshman and in the long term for the success of their program, what would you tell them?

Cameron: I’d say that I can bring football smarts to the team. I’m definitely a team player - I can bring leadership to the table. I’m most proud of being a team player though.

NOTE: Cameron Bulman was recently selected as an All-Broward County selection for this year and will be playing with and against Broward’s finest talent in their all-star game after this season. Congratulations from CanesOverHere.com to Cameron on this accomplishment!
