Interview with WR Signee Kayne Farquharson

CanesOverHere’s Brad Ketron chatted recently with recent Cane WR signee Kayne Farquharson. Here's how their conversation went:

Brad: You’ve been to some practices this year since you’ve been at Miami Dade College finishing things up to qualify. What player or players have stood out to you as making the biggest impact on the team this spring?

Kayne: The offensive line has looked real good, man. They were showing up, they did the deal. They were out there rotating like 7 or 8, and that really stood out to me, to go out there into that hot sun, and you know you don’t have someone to come take over for you when you get a little tired so you got to go that extra mile. That really stood out in my mind more than anything.

Brad: That’s true man, you gotta give it up to the boys up front.

Kayne: Damn right, you know they’re the heart and soul of the team. I tell them all the time if I’ve got a couple of dollars anytime y’all are hungry, I’ve got you.

Brad: How about you owning USC’s secondary in 7 on 7’s last summer? Tell me how that felt.

Kayne: You know there was this thing going on my freshman year, they had Reggie Bush, they had the whole “greatest show on earth”, so you know they pretty much dominated us. So I came in and said, you know, I’ve got to dominate, baby! I’m the captain of my team, I had to come out and I had to put it down. Anything less would be uncivilized.

Brad: I want to know the truth about this question: the parking lot showdown between you and Demarcus Van Dyke that we saw on rivals, was it a bad pass? Or was it good D?

Kayne: It was both, it was a bad pass, and it was good D. He made the deflection so that’s what goes on the stat sheet, and the quarterback didn’t throw it real good, so it was kind of both. I probably could have came through with that play.

Brad: Yeah, I’m just glad we’re not going to be seeing that matchup on the field, he’s going to be shutting people down and you’re going to be lighting people up.

Kayne: Yeah, you know Van Dyke is like a brother to me so I try to joke around a lot, but I try to give him the ins and outs of this whole college football thing, you know what I’m saying?

Brad: Let’s talk about something a little personal. You were in high school and growing up being raised by a single mom, babysitting your siblings on Friday nights, couldn’t go play football. Couldn’t let that talent out. Talk about not being able to shine on the field back then, but still feeling good about taking care of your business. Do you feel like you had some time stolen away from you or do you feel like that it was all in the plan and that it helped you to get ready and stay disciplined?

Kayne: I look at it as the Lord works in mysterious ways. I’m a firm believer in God, you know “In God We Trust”, every dollar bill we see. And if I could change anything man, I wouldn’t change nothing. I don’t know why I didn’t play in high school, but it all worked out for the best. I love my mom to death, I would die for her, so anything she wanted me to do at the time, there wasn’t even a question.

Brad: Who are your heroes? You just talked about your mom, so she definitely has to be one of them for sure.

Kayne: Most definitely. I look up to my junior college coach a lot, man, John Featherstone. I think he’s the best coach in junior college history. Outside of that, I look up to people like Chad Johnson, because we’ve gone down similar roads. He went through the junior college process to do his thing on the college level, and now he’s doing his thing on the NFL level, and I look up to people like that.

I look up to people like firemen, the police, the nurses, the teachers, the doctors, the lawyers…you know, people who are putting in work on a daily basis. Those are my heroes. I graduated high school in 2002, and that was (right after) 9/11 hit, after that you saw NYPD, FDNY and all of that. That really changed my whole opinion of the police, firemen, nurses, and doctors so, those are my everyday heroes.

Brad: This upcoming season, what are some goals you want to accomplish as a Cane?

Kayne: Like my junior college coach says, “Winning takes care of everything,” so I want to get to New Orleans and win a National Championship, period. Individual stats don’t really matter because if we’re in the National Championship obviously I’m doing something good. So that’s my goal—anything less would be uncivilized. The rest, I ain’t even worried about because it’s second nature to me.

Brad: So that’s this year—you’ve got two years as a Cane on the field since you’re coming in as a junior, what are some goals you want to accomplish in your entire career? Do you hope to set some personal records, get two National Championships, break the records of guys like Michael Irvin, Reggie Wayne, Lamar Thomas…?

Kayne: (interrupts laughing, excited) Aw man, you know, the sky’s the limit, man. Anything—1,000 yards, over 10 touchdowns, that’s where I want to get at. If I’m in the return game, I want to destroy records there, too. Whatever records I can get hold of I’m trying to shatter, because that’s what records are for, records are meant to be broken.

Brad: Ok, my people at CanesOverHere debate this all the time on the message board. You’ve got 3 Jessica’s—Jessica Alba, Jessica Beal, and Jessica Simpson. Who’s the hottest?

Kayne: Jessica Simpson.

Brad: As much as you’re all about the U, I know you have to be keeping up with this next recruiting class that’s taking shape. Who is standing out to you so far, who’s the best pickup in your opinion?

Kayne: Patrick Johnson by far. Because he’s the #2 ranked cornerback according to Rivals, and I think he’s the only 5-star we’ve got on the commit list so far. The first time I met him I said, “Do you want to make some money? Do you want to go to the next level? Do you want to by your mama a house? Then commit.” Two days later he committed. I don’t know if it was me or what.

Brad: How easy or hard has the playbook been for you to pick up so far?

Kayne: It ain’t been hard at all, man. It’s football, man, second nature. There’s nobody out there cheering us on yet so it really hasn’t all hit me yet, but when we get to running it, all of the other receivers, and I know all of my teammates’ assignments, that’s when it’s going to get scary.

Brad: What’s your favorite food?

Kayne: Chicken. Fried chicken, baby. Some macaroni and cheese, and some home-style rolls, I’m good to go.

Brad: What’s your favorite song/artist?

Kayne: Young Jeezy, “Dreamin’”.

Brad: Who is Kayne Farqhuarson’s favorite Cane of all time?

Kayne: Michael Irvin, because he set that tone, that heavy swagger that we ain’t gonna back down from nothing…and he also defeated Oklahoma.

Brad: You’re gonna do that this year, you know that?

Kayne: I got you man, you tell everybody, it’s all in the making. I see it already.
