Interview with WR Commit Daniel Adderley

Daniel Adderley is a 6'6", 215 lb. WR from Southside Christian School in Simpsonsville, SC. On November 28, 2006, he orally committed to play football for the University of Miami. I spoke with him about that decision, among other things, this weekend.

Brad with CanesOverHere.com - What’s your favorite song/artist right now?

Daniel - “A Bahamian guy named Avvy. He’s nice.”

What’s your favorite food/restaurant?

“All of the restaurants back home in the Bahamas.”

Does Miami remind you of home in the Bahamas?

“Yeah, Miami in general just reminds me of home, all the palm trees. The houses look like the ones back home, you know—the trees, the beach—it all reminds me of home.”

Is the resemblance to home the main reason you chose Miami?

“Pretty much. I’ve grown up wanting to play for the Canes for a long time, just watching them on TV. Guys like Andre Johnson and Ed Reed I’ve always looked up to. It’s cool to get to meet those guys, too. I just want to help the program any way I can on and off the field.”

Who’s your favorite Cane of all time?

“I would probably have to say Michael Irvin. I talked to a guy named James Trapp (former CB for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Clemson Tigers, from Greenville, SC), and he told me the most physical guy he ever went up against in the league was Michael Irvin. That’s something that I really want to be—physical. Get cornerbacks kind of intimidated—just go up aggressively for every ball, every down, and every play.”

What were your stats for the past couple of seasons?

“Well, my junior season I had 33 receptions for 786 yards, something like 24.9 yards per catch, and 6 TD’s, and my Senior season I had 28 receptions for 455 yards with 7 TD’s and 2 two-point conversions.”

Did they throw you a lot of jump balls with your height?

“That’s pretty much the way we survived on offense. 2 nd down, 3 rd down, they’d just throw up the ball and I’d go get it. We had to switch up some routes though because the defense would just put some guys deep because they knew what was coming. I was double-covered a lot and we had to adjust a couple of times but it was fine. My place was the redzone though.”

Any other teammates getting college attention?

“There is one teammate of mine, Daniel York—he’s a pretty good cornerback. He was pretty much my only competition in high school during practice. He got his tapes in kind of late so that kind of hurt his recruitment. He’s looking at Coastal Carolina, Carson Newman, and a few other places.”

Why haven’t we seen much video of you?

“I think there are a couple of videos of me on Scout.com, but I really didn’t want to highly publicize myself. I thought the best decision was to put it in the coaches’ hands and let them do whatever they’ve go to do with it. I didn’t really want to put it out there and say ‘Hey, this is my film, look at me,’ or anything.”

Is it fair to say that you’re confident in your abilities, but that you’re pretty modest?

“Yeah, I know what I’m capable of with my height and with God-given talent. I’m just not the type of guy that’s going to go and say ‘Hey, I’m doing this, I’m doing that.’ I haven’t proven anything yet.”

You’re 6’6 and 215 – do you plan on putting on any weight?

“I go to a personal trainer, but we don’t really want to put weight on me right now because of basketball. We finish up basketball this week and then probably the playoffs. Once I’m done with basketball that’s when I’m really going to hit the weight room, but basketball is kind of taking up my schedule right now.”

What’s your best attribute as a WR besides your height?

“I would say good routes for how tall I am. Another thing too is I feel like I’m smarter than the cornerbacks, I kind of fool them with body movements. My head coach, Coach Dexter Davis, kind of tells me what cornerbacks think, so I’ve studied that and applied that. Like if a corner is going to look at my waist then there’s ways of moving that I can fool them and make them think I’m going places that I’m not. So I would say my route running and my hands are my strengths.”

What WR do you pattern your game after, college or pro, besides Dwayne Jarrett as you’ve mentioned before?

“Plaxico Burress. I like how physical he is, how big he is, how he goes up for the ball and gets it. He’s pretty good after the catch too. He can make a move or two and take it to the house.”

How soon do you expect to contribute on the field at Miami, and do you expect to take a redshirt year?

“I was looking at the roster that we have and I’ve noticed that we don’t have a lot of really tall receivers. I think the tallest returning is Lance (Leggett), and he’s 6’4. I think I would be the tallest receiver coming in. I think if I listen to the coaches that I could come in and contribute from the very first game. That’s something that I’m really hoping to do is help the team, especially in redzone situations. I don’t see redshirting as a bad thing at all, because to me that means I could contribute that much more the next year.”

What jersey number do you want to wear at Miami?

“Well, I’d like to have 13, but if I can’t get that, I’d like to have 87. I know Khalil Jones is wearing it right now though. I know there’s some numbers open in the 80’s too. I’d like to get 8 if that’s available, and if I can’t get that—it really doesn’t matter. Just give me a jersey—that will be cool.”

What other schools besides Miami, UCF, Middle Tennessee St., & Coastal Carolina were looking at you, and if Miami hadn’t offered, where would you have gone?

“I honestly don’t know. I was really indecisive about all of those other schools. I received offers from Kentucky and Tulsa, but I wasn’t too sure about it. I was going to have to take some official visits and see.”

What do you plan to study when you go to Miami?

“My first choice would be Restaurant Management and Hospitality, so I’ll look in Miami’s courses and find something along that line. If I can’t find that I would probably go with Business Management or something like that.”

Best football moment to date?

“I would say it’s the third play from scrimmage in the very first game on the very first drive this season. The quarterback threw me a slant and I caught it on the 40 and took it for something like 67 yards—I just took off. That was kind of a defining moment. That got my confidence built up pretty high from there.”

The guys at CanesOverHere.com are nuts, so one question they want to know is about the 3 Jessica’s – Alba, Biel, or Simpson – which one do you like the best?

“I would say probably Alba because I saw her in person. I worked in the Bahamas near where they were filming “Into the Blue”, and I saw her. She had a nice tan and all of that stuff—she was looking pretty good.”
